Square-headed Wasps

The Square-headed Wasps were formerly genera in the family SPHECIDAE and were split off into family status (CRABRONIDAE) in 1999. It includes subfamilies: Astatanae, Bembicinae, Crabroninae, Pemphredoniae, Philanthinae and encompasses the former Sphecid subfamilies Larrinae and Nyssoninae. These are solitary wasps. The larvae of this family feed on many types of insects (depending on the species of wasp) that are paralyzed and provided in the nest by the adult female. There are over 200 genera and about 9,000 species world wide. The term “Square-headed Wasps” technically applies only to the subfamily Craboninae, but it is used here as a convenient way of grouping similar species in the family Crabronidae together.
