NURSERY WEB SPIDER FAMILY (Pisauridae)

This spider is very similar to other species in the same genus (Pisaurina). They tend to hold the two pairs of their front legs together. As their name implies, the females guard their eggs until the spiderlings hatch and disperse. The identification relies on very similar examples adjudicated and shown in BugGuide.

 

The specimen in the first image was found at Camp Brewster in the spring. The specimen in the 2nd image was photographed on the Logan Fontenelle building on 6/8/17, having been attracted by the building light. This spider is considered to be common in this area.
