Pale Jumping Spider

Pale Jumping Spider

Thiodina sylvana
(Thiodinae)

This jumping spider is less than 1/2 inch long. Image “A” shows a male. The female has much more subdued markings in tan and brown. Like other ‘jumpers” this one can propel himself quickly and accurately from leaf to leaf, and to stems of grasses and other low vegetation in search of prey. It was identified with the help of BugGuide by its black head with red and white markings, and the multi-colored legs.

This is our first sighting of this species of jumping spider in Fontenelle Forest – on grass. So we do not yet have any estimate of its abundance.
