The female Platycryptus is approximately 1/2 inch and the males are a little smaller, about 3/8 inch. They are gray with a prominent gray and black pattern on the back which blends into surfaces such as tree bark. The males have orange facial hair. This jumping spider was photographed in Fontenelle Forest and identified with the help of the volunteer experts at BugGuide.

Their abundance is yet unknown.

Eggs are laid and hatched in the summer. Adults overwinter in silken shelters, usually under loose tree bark. Although they spin individual shelters, many will crowd together during hibernation.
