This large female wolf spider is about 1 inch (25 mm) in length, covered with dark hair. The legs are banded with a lighter brown color at the joints. The males are smaller, about 3/4 inch (16 to 18 mm) long, and are much lighter in color than the females. These spiders hunt alone, usually at night. Most live in a burrow.

This spider is probably common in this area although it is not often seen because of its nocturnal hunting habit. They are generally found from Nebraska eastward to the east coast and eastern Canada.

The genus Tigrosa was formerly known as Hogna. The female carries her young hatchling spiders on her back for protection as shown here.
